English: Writing, composition skills, planning writing, evaluating and editing, reviewing and sharing work.
Explore the Historic rooms at Newstead Abbey with a professional writer and tour guide who will tell you more about the history of the building and lead you through a series of writing activities inspired by the Abbey and it’s most famous inhabitant the poet, Lord Byron.
In this session:
- Explore the Great Hall and use Byron’s nature writing as an impetus to write original poetry. Head down to the Medieval Cloisters to hear and write ghost stories. Examine the many portraits in the portrait gallery and use them to write about character using personification poems.
- Develop your writing skills by using a series of led writing activities with a professional poet and playwright, with a focus on getting started from scratch and finding enjoyment in composition.
- Write a group poem together, as well as individual writing.
- Support and develop your group’s writing skills through planning, composing and reviewing text, with tips on editing and improving work.
This half day session can also be run as a full day, giving groups the chance to extend and develop their writing.
