We are now entering the new, exciting phase of the ‘Raise The Roof’ works at Newstead Abbey. The house is being prepared for the works by our Curators in readiness for the planned repairs.

The new ‘Heart of Medieval Newstead’ exhibition in the Cloisters is open every day 11am – 4pm (last entry 3pm) and a walk through of the main House will be available at 12PM & 2PM at weekends & school holidays. The ‘Heart of Medieval Newstead’ exhibition and House Walk Throughs are included in Standard Admission.

History: changes within living memory and beyond living memory; understanding some of the ways in which we find out about the past

In this session:

  • Dress up as Victorian schoolchildren, practise the ‘Three R’s’ in the schoolroom and see the difference between classrooms and lessons then and now. Sit up straight and don’t fidget or the teacher will have to use the finger stocks and backboard to correct your bad habits
  • Explore Newstead Abbey’s Victorian Nursery Attic, look into Nanny’s bedroom (she looked after the Webb children at Newstead), and also Miss Augusta Webb’s bedroom where we play a memory game with household Victorian artefacts
  • Learn about the Webb children themselves and what life was like for them at Newstead

Duration: 1.5 hours | 10.30am -12noon or 1pm – 2.30pm

Cost per session: £7 per head, minimum charge of 25 pupils

Key Stage: 1/2
