Art and Design: Exploring Pattern

English: Writing, composition skills, planning writing, evaluating and editing, reviewing and sharing work.
Complete your Discover Arts Award in the beautiful location of Newstead Abbey. Find out about the poet Lord Byron and explore the building, its artwork and history. This day comprises two creative sessions which include a sharing segment and time to fill in our specially designed Arts Award Discover Workbook.

In these sessions:

  • Session 1: Wonderful Wallpaper (90 mins)

Using the Art, Design and Architecture within Newstead Abbey your class will explore the beautiful rooms in the building and create drawings of the fascinating patterns and shapes they discover.

They will explore how to create and manipulate these shapes using rotation, reflection and symmetry to create a collaborative piece of collaged, patterned wallpaper.

  • Session 2: Poetry Tour (90 mins)

“But words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling like dew, upon a thought, produces that which makes thousands. Perhaps millions think.” Don Juan III

Find out about the poet Lord Byron and explore his Great Hall, Dining Room and Bedroom. Using the building and its stories as prompts, your class will be tasked with a series of short writing activities which will accumulate into a group poem. This session will support and develop your group’s writing skills through planning, composing and reviewing text.
